“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”- Aristotle
A lot of people do not believe that someone can really be happy because of some misconceptions. Others believe that the people who claim to be happy are in fact the miserable people in real life. (Ouchy! Does this mean that happy people are fake?) Others also think that happy people are living in “dream-land” or living in their fantasy world. (It is like saying that happiness is not real! If that’s the case, what a sad sad world this is that we’re living in…) And there are others who see happy people as weak people who pretend to be “happy” as a coping mechanism, because they cannot come to terms with the harsh reality of the world. (My goodness! How did this happen?).
I tell you why I believe that someone can truly be happy.
…Because Happy People can be sad, too.
Contrary to the belief that happy people are always on a good disposition, the reality is happy people also experience sadness, hurt, grief or even anger. The only difference is that they welcome these emotions, allow themselves to feel them, but choose not to dwell too much on them. They know when to “let go” of these emotions. They know that they have the power over them, and not the other way around.
…Because Happy People live in the same world where unhappy people live in, only they have different perspectives.
Unhappy people are used to only notice the negative things in life. The happy people choose to focus more on the good things that are happening. They are grateful for what they have that is why they know that they have a lot. They also know that challenges and obstacles happen, but what they see are the opportunities!
…Because Happy People are the Kind and Forgiving people.
For some people, Kindness and Forgiveness are not always easy to give. But being kind and being able to forgive others and ones self are uplifting and relieving. Happy people do not have difficulty in showing kindness and in giving and accepting forgiveness.
So you see, being happy is not an illusion. It’s a matter of perspective. It’s a matter of choice.
I wish everyone a happy week ahead! I hope that you choose to be happy! 🙂
This was so insightful.Even I believe that happy people come from the same zone from where the unhappy ones originate.Inspirational!

It can be a combination of life circumstances as well as your outlook – an amalgamation of life in all its entirety that leads to happiness. Happiness is fluid though, no one is constantly happy, as no one is constantly sad, its a state but never permanent in my opinion – great to read 😀 Hope you can stop by and read my latest blog

The happiest person I have ever seen in my life is my Guru PRAMUKH SWAMI MAHARAJ. Recently on 13 August 2016, he passed away from this world. But HE continues to live in the hearts of hundreds of thousands people like me forever. HE could make others happy just by his one kind look or a tender touch. Those who are unhappy or doubt about Happiness to be real are advised to browse the website http://www.pramukhswami.org which dedicated to cover his 95 years Happiest journey on our planet earth.

Sure HE will but if U R thirsty you have to drink water & if U R hungry you have to eat. Likewise, if you really want to be happy then you must go to this Divine/Happiest man. Physically He is no more with us but He is very much with us at the website : http://www.pramukhswami.org FYI Dr APJ Kalam – rocket scientist and ex-president of India has noted in his book “TRANSECENDNCE” that he felt and experienced the presence of Pramukh Swami when he thought about HIM while at Sri Lanka and again while he was at Edinborough. Faith matters ! Have faith, think of HIM and HE will be with U to make you happy ! That’s my own experience too.

I liked this post a lot Nina. Yes, happy get sad, angry, hurt, frustrated and even feel negative from time to time. We can be all those things and still find things to be happy about. 🙂

Thank you Nikki! You are right! Happy people are not robot…they too are susceptible to feel other emotions aside from happy, but that does not mean they cannot be happy with their lives. 🙂

What a great post! It truly is a matter of perspective and choice, and anyone can be really happy if they work towards it! I know happy people are real, because I’m one of them! 😊

Thanks Jo! 🙂 I believe in that too, and I may not always be “cherry” or upbeat all the time, and I don’t have everything that I want in my life, but I can say that I am happy too…at least in my own way! 🙂

Great post Nina. Yes it really is a matter of choice but sometimes circumstances change and no matter how much we choose to want to be happy it doesn’t come naturally. But if it’s within us we can find that happiness again. Stay well my friend.

Thank you Miriam. I see your point, and you are correct. It is really difficult to be happy especially when we’re in a situation to feel really upset or sad. And it’s fine…as long as we’re willing to embrace to be happy again, we’ll eventually be.
I am doing good my friend. I hope you that you are too. 🙂

Yes it’s a journey isn’t it. Ups and downs, highs and lows but you’re right, if we’re willing to embrace happiness again we will. I’m doing okay. Looking forward to the weekend. 🙂

Ohhhh so much to think about. Wow. It’s okay if people are sad or frustrated or mad at times. Maybe it’s what they do with those feelings that separates happy people from unhappy people. So I agree with what you, it’s a matter of choice.

Thank you! 🙂 You are right, we are not excused from feeling bad, but it’s how we respond that makes the difference! 🙂

Yes yes, it’s definitely a question of choice. And I love the happy photo – shows how difficult it sometimes is to stay smily in the midst of the unhappy masses. The Einstein quote in the sidebar is also very appropriate. Thanks for a good start to the day 🙂
