“Don’t you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you’re not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you’ve lived nearly half the time you have to live already?” ― Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises
If I were to rate how I have lived my life for today, I give it 4/10 (with 10 being the highest). Let me tell you why.
I had the chance to stay at home for 11 or 12 hours before going to work again BUT…
– I didn’t play or had a one on one, heart to heart time with my daughter.
– I didn’t talk to my husband or even asked him how his day was.
– I didn’t get off the bed when I woke up to do much needed exercise.
– I didn’t pray.
– I didn’t enjoy all the beautiful things waiting for me outdoor… I didn’t appreciate the sunny afternoon which could have been a perfect time to do cloud-watching with Gaby, or to watch her play with the other kids in our mini-park.
– I didn’t read a book, nor watch one of the videos for a training that I enrolled myself to.
I was not productive. I was just…lazy.
In other words, I took for granted the wonderful opportunities that TODAY has just offered me.
Most of the time, we may or may not be aware, we tend to neglect the things that we have in abundance.
We don’t take time to appreciate our family because subconsiously, we know that they’ll just be around…
Because of the high-tech generation today, we’re missing the beauty of personal human interaction…
We’re so absorbed in our computers or cellphones, we don’t go out to smell the flowers, to feel the grass on our feet, to feel the warmth of the sun and enjoy nature…
Today, I was lazy to live. But tomorrow, I’ll live a day in my life to the fullest! I hope you do the same!
You quoted Ernest Hemingway’s words from The Sun Also Rises and I immediately loved this post! Haha
You perfectly expressed the sad scenario of human relations nowadays: “Because of the high-tech generation today, we’re missing the beauty of personal human interaction…” We, now rarely stop to think and consider those things that truly matter to us.
Like you, I too often fall short on the important things that I should be doing instead burying myself on the mundane ones.
Thank you for sharing Nina!

Thank you Andrei! ☺ It wasn’t a good day for me, but it was a good opportunity for self-evaluation. ☺

We all had our days Nina. But I do appreciate your openness to share what you’ve learned from that instance 🙂
You’ve made it into a positive one and turned it as an encouragement for others too 🙂

Nina I so agree totally with this quote and it is so true life is going by and yet we are trying to analyze our lives. Great post thanks for sharing.

Maybe an occasional lazy day helps us being more productive on the other days sometimes?

Thank you Lacey. ☺ I see you have a valid point… I know “me time” is good but I think I just didn’t do any good for myself that day either so I felt bad…

I call those days the emotional downtime that is needed to be able to provide for others. I loved reading this. Your “smile you are loved” actually made me smile. Thank you!

Thanks, Nina. Yes, I know. I just had to take a minute to tell you how I feel. People should do that more often. Don’t you think so? Kindness. 🙂

I agree! That’s one thing I would encourage everyone to practice- to let people know that you appreciate them, that you’re grateful for what they do, or that you think they’re doing great!…unfortunately some people are only good in criticizing. What a difference it would make to do the other way around! More people would be much happier! 😊😙

I liked this so much, Nina, I re-blogged it on my site. Hope you don’t mind. There are times when we can and should be “lazy.” But you’re right, if that becomes habit, then we are in trouble. Live the beautiful day…”This is a day which the Lord has made, in it I shall rejoice!” ~Psalm 118:24

Hello Nina,
I loved this post as a way of encouraging yourself and us that we must make every second count and appreciate people in our life. It’s very true, as we shouldn’t take things for granted. But please don’t be too hard on yourself on your ‘wasted day’ as you may have needed some quiet down time. Sometimes that’s the kindest thing we can do for ourselves. And it’s then that you may have been resolving something in your mind. You can’t be over busy while that’s happening!
Now I just ask myself if I enjoyed pottering around and if it’s yes, I don’t beat myself up…anymore!
Thank you… your writing is inspiring 🌹💕

Thank you for your kind words, Di. I will not disagree with you- perhaps I really needed the “downtime” to think or rather to stop thinking and just let things be for a while… I must admit, although I felt bad that I wasn’t productive and felt like I wasted time, it did me good as I was able to rest my mind… I just have to make sure it doesn’t become a habit! ☺

Hello Nina!
Thank you for your lovely reply. I’m glad you arrived at that thought because I know what it’s like to ‘beat yourself up’ for things we ‘should’ do and it’s not a nice feeling.
So I just wanted to remind you to be kind and gentle on yourself….
Take care my friend 💜

I am not being productive at all today. I did Yoga…a short blog….and I’ve spent most of the day debating taking a nap. I’m on allergy meds so I’m going to blame them. 😉

What a wonderful quote and it’s all so true isn’t it Nina. I’m guilty of having many days as you described, where, at the end of it I’ve thought ‘what a waste, I could have done so much more.’. Thanks for a wonderful reminder to make the most out of our days. 🙂

Thank you Miriam! That is exactly how I felt! Perhaps we also need these days every once in a while to give ourselves a break for always striving to do our best not just for ourselves, but in serving other people too. 😊
I hope all is well with your family and your new job. ☺

Life is so short, but we almost can’t really comprehend it. We’ve always been here. Tomorrow’s always come. I think we take for granted tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
