A Happy Story #1- My Starbucks Treat!

“Be the reason someone smiles today!”- Unknown

Hello Everyone! 🙂

This is the first post for “Something Personal”– a post that is intended to share real personal happy stories with you. As this is my first post, I want it to be “light” and “relate-able”.

Alright, here we go…

I was on a 3-day vacation from work last week. Before I went on leave, I promised my 2 best buds at work that I’m going to treat them coffee at Starbucks when I return as my gesture of gratitude for covering for my work. (Too bad for me, I said it first before checking my remaining money for my weekly allowance budget!)

So, you can  probably guess what my dilemma is when I got back to work. If I will treat them, I’ll be short of my allowance for 2-days. Will I keep my promise? What would you do?

Okay, so we went to Starbucks and I bought them their favorite drinks! When I saw the smile on their faces, I was thinking- how easy it will be for me to probably just skip my lunch at work or bring my food to work instead of buying it for the next 2 days! My worried thought instantly transformed to a happy one… 🙂

When I paid and gave my Starbucks card to the barista, we found out that I still haven’t gotten my birthday cake. So we instantly had an additional super yummy chocolate cake for free!…and then, when I got my receipt, I saw that I now have 12 stars which means that I have another free coffee from Starbucks that I can get anytime! Yay!

But that’s not all…3 days after, we’re all surprised to know that our pay day came a little early this time! How’s that? I feel like I just passed a test, and my Angel is winking at me!

Now, it’s your time to share… 🙂

Are You Wealthy?

“Your Wealth equals your Gratitude. Your Gratitude equals your Wealth.”- Bo Sanchez

As a kid, I used to think that wealth is about money. That is is about treasures and jewelries. That it is about possessing material things. And I believe I had that perception even until after I graduated college.

But as I grow older, and get to experience life outside school and my comfort zone, I get to realize more that wealth is not measured by the amount of money that we have; rather it is measured by how appreciative we are with the things that we have.

You see, no matter how rich a person is in terms of  material possession, but if he is not grateful with what he has, he will never be contented and will always be wanting more…nothing will be enough to satisfy his needs or desires. He will never be happy.

On the other hand, a grateful person lives like a King. Why? Because he knows how to appreciate everything that he has in life, no matter how simple or grand they may be…and because of that, he realizes he has so much to be thankful for and he is happy.

I don’t own a company, but I have a beautiful household…and I thank God.
I don’t look like a celebrity, but I have a faithful husband…and I thank God.
I don’t have money for a luxurious hobby, but I have my guitar always waiting for me to play…and I thank God.
I can’t draw, nor swim, nor drive, but I can write and sing and cook…and I thank God.
I can’t afford to treat my friends always, but they will ALWAYS be there for me…and I thank God.
I don’t always eat expensive meals, but I eat 3 times a day…and I thank God.
I don’t have shiny chandeliers above me, but I look at the sky and I have the stars…and I thank God.

…and my list could go on and on and on.

So, are you wealthy? It is your choice. 🙂

A Note from Me :)- #2

It was my birthday yesterday, and in doing some reflections, I have come up with  5 life principles that I would like to share with you.

  1. You can share your happiness with people, but you cannot depend your happiness on them. If we rely our happiness on others, we can never be truly happy.
  2. You don’t always get what you want, even coming from the people who loves you. So don’t set expectations for people, set the expectation to yourself.
  3. If you want people to be nice to you, make sure that you are nice to them first.
  4. Do not compare yourself to others because you only see what you are allowed to see. You don’t know their own personal battles. We are beautiful in our own kind of way and we should be happy about that.
  5. Setting goals are useless until you work on them. And it really takes commitment, discipline and ACTION for them to work! This is the happiness that is not always fun to do, but will give huge happiness whenever you see yourself progress.

Am I satisfied with my life now? Not yet as I know there are still a lot of opportunities that I could improve on.

Am I contented? Not yet because I know that I can still better myself in many aspects especially in the physical or health department.

But I AM HAPPY. Despite the downs and challenges that life throws at me, I can honestly say that I am happy with my life. I accept my self for who I am, and I think that makes the difference!

My  birthday wish is for all of us to see the beautiful and the good in ourselves and to start sharing that with others! Have a happy life.

Cheers,
Nina 🙂

A Day for Reflection

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” ― Robert Brault

Instead of focusing on the things that I can do to prepare for this upcoming week, this time I would like to go “backwards” and start my week by reflecting on the things that happened last week.

THINGS THAT I AM GRATEFUL FOR:

  • Having to spend the weekend with more family. My dad came to visit and so we get to spend the weekend with him, with my sister and her family, and my brother and his girlfriend. My parents live at another city and we only see each other during Holiday Vacations. I appreciate that they come here to us and visit their grandchildren whenever they can. They have not missed any birthday celebration for their grand kids. 🙂
  • Having a wonderful and sweet daughter. My brother in-law and his wife lost their first-born child 6 days after he was born. He had a hypoplastic left heart syndrome and his survival rate was very low. This experience made me more appreciative of my  4-year old daughter.  Being a toddler, Gaby could be a little too clingy, stubborn, too playful, and annoying. There are times when I lose my temper with her, but I realize that I’d rather have her that way- always active, happy, very playful and stubborn- rather than being too quiet or sad, or needing special caring. I am blessed that she is healthy, beautiful and smart!
  • Having a faithful husband. I know some people who engages in extra-marital affairs and some with failed marriages. Some of them are my friends. I am grateful that me and my husband have been together for almost 8 years without having to deal with extra-marital affair issues. I am happy that my husband is very expressive of his thoughts- he lets me know when something about me bothers him, or if there is something about him that I NEED TO KNOW. I am also grateful that our weekend is “family day.”

THINGS THAT I COULD HAVE DONE BETTER:

  • I missed jogging this week ( and the previous week) 😦 Unlike my husband who plays basketball and exercises regularly, for me, exercising is something that I really need to work on. He even bought me a rubber shoes to use for jogging this week!
  • The way I handled stress at work last week. There’s too much work, too little time, and every thing is due… I had to cover for an office mate who was out sick for 2 days and so I had to set aside my reports and some other tasks. It was very difficult to catch up, and I was a little grumpy!
  • I should not have stayed very late in the office. It was Gaby’s first week in school and I was coming home late. I didn’t have time and energy to study or with her, and I easily got annoyed with her because I was too tired from work.

SOMETHING FOR MYSELF:

It’s nice to reward ourselves for things that we like every once in a while.

b4945061-3535-4a62-a46c-189cc0cd1fff.jpg

Last weekend, I bought this unusual notebook with tin cover. I like its red-yellow butterfly picture, and its different pages. I intend to use this for writing haikus, sketching and  drawing, and for writing random stuffs or ideas for my blog.

MY CHALLENGE FOR MYSELF AND FOR YOU THIS WEEK:

Do something for yourself that you will thank yourself for in the future.

Your turn now…how was your week? I would love to hear your stories. 🙂

Live Happier. Here’s HOW.

I want to share with you 4 key points that I have learned in order to live a happier life. Believe me when I say that I am still trying my very best to adapt these everyday, and sometimes I fail, but what’s important is I don’t stop trying =)

1. ACCEPTANCE

“I’m okay with what I ultimately can’t do, because there is so much that I can do.”-Sam Berns

It’s our automatic response to make excuses when we are afraid to fail at something that we really want to achieve in life. We can come up with all the reasons that hinders us from doing what needs to be done. But we need to be bigger than our limitations! We should focus on the things that we can control and change.

2. GRATITUDE

“We have a choice. Either to be angry for what we don’t have, or be thankful for what we do have.”- Nick Vujicic

If we have a grateful attitude, we will never fail to find a reason to be thankful for everyday. We will always see the good in a bad circumstance or situation. We have more appreciation for life because we find joy in even the simplest things.

I’ve written more about this topic on my blog entitled To be Happy, be Grateful

3. SELF-AWARENESS

“Two biggest barriers to you fulfilling your purpose in life is Envy and People-pleasing.”- Rick Warren

We can never be truly happy if we are always wishing to be someone else or be like someone else; nor can we be happy pretending to be someone else just to belong or feel accepted. Why? because trying to be like someone we’re not prevents us from reaching our full potentials. We need to know ourselves- embrace our strengths and accept our limitations. This way, we can truly be at peace with ourselves and be happy with who we are.

4. COMPANY

“People inspire you, or they drain you. Pick them wisely.”- Hans Hansen

The people that you are with can affect how you look at yourself and the world around you. If you stay in the company of negative people- those who always whine and complain about their lives, blame other people of their misfortunes, and always see the obstacles in reaching their goals- tendency is, you become one of them. As the saying goes, birds of the same feathers flock together. So fly with the optimistic guys- be with the happy, vibrant and successful people. They are the ones who give a positive influence in your life.

I hope you’ll consider these and experience a happier life! 🙂
