I recently learned an effective formula for happiness.
But before I share it with you, I want to tell you first that contrary to what many people believe, the opposite of happiness is not necessarily loneliness or sadness. It could be that the opposite of happiness is FEAR.
To explain further, allow me to give you examples.
We are not happy for a lot of reasons… here’s to name a few:
We do not like our current job. We can choose to resign and follow our passion but we’re afraid we’ll only fail.
We do not like our boss. We can choose to disagree with his methods, but we choose to keep quiet and simply follow because we’re afraid that he might fire us.
We’re not getting any richer. We can choose a different career path but we’re afraid to take risks.
We stay in unhealthy relationships. We can choose to leave but we fear nobody else will accept and love us.
We cannot be our self. We choose to pretend because we’re afraid people will not like us or they will judge us if we show who we truly are.
We hurt our family or friends. We can choose to ask forgiveness and re-connect, but we fear rejection.
We can’t tell a friend that we love him or her. Well we can, but would not because we’re afraid of getting embarrassed or losing the friendship if our feelings are not reciprocated.
So how do we overcome our FEAR? The answer is LOVING ENOUGH.
If you love yourself enough– you will not allow people to disrespect and maltreat you.
If you love who you are enough– you will believe more on what you are capable of and trust what you can achieve.
If you love your family enough– you will get out of your comfort zone to seek what’s the best for them.
If you love your dreams enough– you will not be afraid to take risks. And even if you fail multiple times, you will not give up.
If you love others enough– you will be kinder and more forgiving to them.
If you love God enough– you will not be afraid to surrender your life and trust His will and plans for you.
If our love to ourselves and to others become greater than our fears, that is the time that we can be happy.
