Deal with Negative Emotions, Positively

“Every day we have plenty of opportunities to get angry, stressed or offended. But what you’re doing when you indulge these negative emotions is giving something outside yourself power over your happiness. You can choose to not let little things upset you.”- Joel Osteen

Negative emotions are inevitable. Everyday, we encounter circumstances that would arouse one or more of these emotions in us. The truth is, no matter how positive a person we are, we still get affected and we still can’t help but feel these negative emotions even if we don’t want to.

So, how do we handle these? What can we do so that they don’t affect us as much? In my personal opinion, I think that we should allow ourselves to feel them. Let ourselves get acquainted with those feelings– welcome them and accept them. And then, we detach from them. Allowing ourselves to feel the negative emotions is us recognizing that we don’t feel good about something.

Now, it is important to remember that after we come from that realization, we have 2 options: It is either we dwell on these emotions long enough that they make our lives miserable, OR we take charge and have the power over them by analyzing their root causes and come up of possible solutions to change them.

According to Gretchen Rubin, “Negative emotions like loneliness, envy, and guilt have an important role to play in a happy life; they’re big, flashing signs that something needs to change.” I agree with her completely! 🙂

  1. Agreed, all emotions are there to alert us of something. They’re like a sign prompting us to take a look at why they are there and then urging us to properly deal with them. Looked at in this way, emotions become neither positive or negative, but normative. We can enjoy them or dislike them, but they are always making us assess and pull back into that balanced centre.

  2. It all depends how we deal with every situation and indeed positivism is a door to happiness .
With this positivism I want to nominate you for The Blogger Recognition Award! I hope you will accept it 🙂

  3. psychologists say that happiness is when certain multiple things are going right in your life and that sadness can just be used as an indicator that something is going right and that something needs to be fixed. as humans, we have evolved to feel fearful, sad, and anxious, meaning they all serve a purpose in our life. I agree that they need to be embraced and not ignored. nice post Nina:)

    1. Thank you Vincent! I appreciate your supportive comment. 🙂
Unfortunately, in reality a lot of us opt to either ignore or dwell too much on these “negative” emotions, hence the unpleasant impact on our lives. I hope more people would learn how to deal with them in a healthier way. 🙂

  4. Mr Midnight says that he couldn´t agree more. It´s important to experience negativity because one cannot have one polarity and not the other other. Mr Midnight adds that if we were always positive and happy all the time it would be like going through life on a high, such as if Mr Midnight could always munch through his food-sticks all day. By the way, Mr Midnight is a cat. Sir Winston also adds that if life was always positive for people then the human race wouldn´t move forward and develop anymore. There wouldn´t really be an incentive. That is why negative things are postitive! 🙂 Thank you for posting.
